Clearance, Clarence...

Or a lack of it is what prompted this little trick. If you work on shovels much you'll soon figure out, that with the cylinders bolted in place, it's nearly impossible to insert two of the head bolts. The simple solution? Tape em' in place before installing the cylinders, but only after thoroughly wire brushing the threads. I've mostly only ran into this issue on later shovels.

Troublehead

One of these things is not like the other things.

If only....

Isaiah 48:18-19

18 If only you had paid attention to my commands,
your peace would have been like a river,
your well-being like the waves of the sea.
19 Your descendants would have been like the sand,
your children like its numberless grains;
their name would never be blotted out
nor destroyed from before me.”

Troublehead

I may have to add "Troublehead" to my list of recurring post titles.

Williams Precision Engines

If you guys are close to St Paul IN, and need engine work done, these are the people to see. Roger has been doing my cylinder and head work for nearly eight years now. High quality, quick turn around, and all around good guys to deal with. He also static balances flywheels.

Fast Black "H"

I've always used PJ1 Coatings Fast Black Wrinkle "W" paint on my cylinders. It's available through most aftermarket supply houses, or catalog stores, and provides a very good looking and durable wrinkle black finish. This is the first time I've used their flat black or "H" on a set of cylinders. I wasn't sure how well I would like it, but I must admit, it's growing on me.

The dirty tranny....

...Is no more!!! Daves' transmission needed a main shaft swap and some minor fork adjustments so I took advantage of the opportunity to clean up the case a bit. If you've seen the engine this is backing up, you know why.

Quality!!

I personally can't afford any of Mullins Chain Drives' parts, but they are very high quality. If you have the coin, I'd totally recommend them.

Progress...

Slow and steady wins the race, right?

Colossians 2:20-3:10

2:20 Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.[b] 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Galatians 6:1-10

1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If any of you think you are something when you are nothing, you deceive yourselves. 4 Each of you should test your own actions. Then you can take pride in yourself, without comparing yourself to somebody else, 5 for each of you should carry your own load. 6 Nevertheless, those who receive instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.
7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. People reap what they sow. 8 Those who sow to please their sinful nature, from that nature[a] will reap destruction; those who sow to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Another project

This one started out as a stock '97 fatboy. It's getting new wheels, sheet metal, wide tire kit, top end gaskets, new handle bars with internal wiring, later model brakes, chrome front end, and a few other bits and pieces. Not exactly my style of bike, but that doesn't mean it can't be done well.

I'd be happier

If I could work on only shovelheads, all the time. Yeah, that would make me smile.

Troublehead!!!

Tore into this engine today. Some typical issues, some not so typical. Looks as though the front cylinder suffered the worst; cracked piston, heavy scoring in the bore, and a cracked ring. For some reason this cylinder also had two head gaskets. Found a bunch of oil on top of both pistons and what I would consider to be excessive carbon build up in both chambers. Wrist pin bushings are loose, exhaust valve guides are shot, and exhaust valves have a bit of a step in them. It sounds bad, but in the end this guy is luckier than a dog with two weiners, it could have been was worse if that piston had come apart.

3 Head Gaskets,

But only 2 heads. I hate finding stuff like this when I tear down engines. While it's not hard to figure out why the engine had only two heads, it may be a bit harder to figure out why it had two gaskets on the front cylinder.
